Dallas Cowboys fans could only laugh as they watched Kellen Moore and the New Orleans Saints make a head scratching decision with their first pick in the second round. With Shedeur Sanders still on the board and the Saints needing a quarterback for the future, it felt like an easy selection. Sanders goes to New Orleans, right? That'd give Moore his franchise quarterback and he'd be landing Sanders with a value pick, as he was previously projected to go in the first round. Again, easy pick, right?
Wrong. Moore and the Saints did draft a quarterback in the second round but it wasn't Sanders. No, the Saints decided to go with Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough, who played in college for seven years and spent time with three different schools (Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville). Shough's numbers with Louisville this past year were fine but it's hard not to laugh at this pick by Moore. It definitely felt like a reach for the team.
Cowboys fans can't contain their laughter at Kellen Moore's draft mistake
Moore is in his first year with the Saints after leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl LIX victory (it still hurts to think about that game) and has a complex history with the Cowboys. He spent four years as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys before a one-year stint with the Chargers and then, of course, the aforementioned 2024 season with the rival Eagles. The Saints were impressed by what they saw from him and hired him to be their next head coach.
It's not a surprise that Moore wanted to find a quarterback -- his quarterback -- for his New Orleans stint but the fact that he passed on Shedeur Sanders to take Shough is laughable and it's hard not to imagine this backfiring on him. Cowboys fans will enjoy that if that is indeed what ends up playing out.
